Fine vintage stoneware commemorates Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, 1669, one of the oldest pubs in the City of London, located at 145 Fleet Street. Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese takes you back to the 17th Century, and you really feel you are experiencing a piece of history. The pub is very popular with the locals and tourists and offers an impressive list of Samuel Smith beers, to keep its most ardent enthusiasts happy. The atmosphere is warm and friendly and there are a multitude of rooms, stairs, nooks, and crannies. The downstairs feels like a series of caves and cubby holes; the ground floor has a chophouse and a restaurant so you can enjoy the surroundings. Rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1668, the place is steeped in history, including memorabilia of where Dr. Johnson sat when frequenting the establishment. At the bottom of the bowl, it says "Beard 71", which is the signature and date of the creator of the bowl. On the bottom right, it says "Dr. Johnson (1709-84)". Dr. Samuel Johnson is famous for his quote: "Why, Sir, you find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford". Dr. Johnson is famous for having authored "A Dictionary Of The English Language" in 1755, which was the premier dictionary used for nearly 200 years. This souvenir bowl, measuring 5 3/4 inches across, is over 40 years old. It can rest on a dresser top, or it can be hung on the wall -- how about in your own Home Bar? See the hanger on the back of the bowl in one of the photos. Cash only please. (434)
